Heartbreaking zombie short “Cargo”

I was reading an article at io9 about  The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Films of 2013 and one in particular had me in tears.

Cargo

“Set during the zombie apocalypse, Cargo celebrates ingenuity as a father who has been bitten by a zombie tries to provide for his infant daughter’s survival, using the tropes of the genre to surprisingly heartbreaking effect.”

Directed by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke, Cargo was a finalist in Tropfest Australia 2013. It’s absolutely heartbreaking. Pay attention to the use of the balloon; every Tropfest has a “trope” – a theme – that must be incorporated into each entry, and this year’s (announced at the end of last year’s festival) was “balloon”.

It’s an original take on the zombie genre, where it looks as if everything’s been done that can be done. Apparently, there’s still plenty of stories to be told. I hope there are more like this.
